Sun and Beach
In Andalucia we can enjoy more than 3000 hours of sunlight a year. With near 900 Km. of coastline distributed between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, this coast hides exceptional places, with virgin beaches, magnificent cliffs, marshes full of life and an underwater world still little known, that contains an authentic ecological paradise.
Costa de la Luz
The Costa de la Luz is the Atlantic side of Andalucia. It extends on soft and golden sands, from the mouth of the Guadiana in Ayamonte, in the province of Huelva, to near the mouth of the Guadalquivir, in Cadiz. A coastline of more than 200 Km. of beaches lined with pines that can grow just few metres from the sea. More than 3.000 hours of sunlight a year and mild, calm weather invite you to discover places, hardly altered due to the presence of man or to have fun in the local towns and villages.
Costa del Sol
From its inception as an international tourist destination more than half century ago, the Costa del Sol presents the sun and beach as its best calling card. The geographical characteristics of Malaga’s coastline naturally attract and please visitors with some160 kilometres of coastline and a large and varied selection of beaches.
The main and most important reason to explain the success of the Costa del Sol as compared to other tourist areas: the weather. Southern Europe is usually mild, but in the province of Malaga the weather is much milder due to its coastline being protected from the interior winds by an excellent mountain range that sometimes even reaches out into the sea. This geographical feature brings mild temperatures in winter and a summer free of the oppressive heat of the interior regions.
On many of the beautiful beaches the blue flag flies in the summer, denoting that the European Union guarantees the good condition of the water and sand, and the quality of the public services and installations. The beaches near the city centres have more services, among them, the chiringuitos (these refreshment stalls/snack bars can be found even in little frequented areas but they definitely have regular customers), the menus normally include the delicious "fried fish" of the Malaga’s coast; toilets, showers, children’s playground, jet ski rentals, pedalos or water-skis, first-aid post, life guards and even a cooling oasis of palm trees.
Almería's Coast
The coast of Almeria, with more than 190 kms. of open and closed beaches, has many coves, inlets and cliffs typical of the Mediterranean coast. Some of these beaches are dedicated Naturist sites and many beaches offer all types of water sports, especially underwater fishing. There are also along the coast, many tourist centres where you can play sports such as golf, tennis, etc.
Costa Tropical
The Costa Tropical, situated between the Costa del Sol and the Costa de Almería, is another beautiful area with good facilities and attractions to enjoy excellent holidays. Its Mediterranean situation, its proximity to the North of Africa and Sierra Nevada, with the highest above sea level of the Peninsula, all help protect this coast from the cold winds of the north. A subtropical microclimate, with 320 days of sun light and an average temperature around 20 ºC, make the tropical fruit crops flourish in the exuberant fertile plains.
Cliffs, coves and extensive beaches shape the landscape of this coast that was desired and conquered by many colonists, among them the Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs, who fought over the land and who luckily left evidence of their cultures.
There are five tourist centres on the Costa Tropical: Almuñécar (La Herradura), Salobreña, Motril, Castell de Ferro and La Rábita. All of them have good tourist infrastructure and are ideal for practicing many sports like windsurfing, parasailing, scuba diving, fishing, sailing, water skiing, golf, tennis, squash, riding, etc…
