Festivals and Traditions
Flamenco is one of the important cultural influences of Andalucia and is also part of the essential structure of many themed routes (Ruta de los Cantes Básicos, Mina de Huelva and its fandangos, etc).
Andalucia cannot be understood or lived completely without immersing yourself in its festivals and traditions. Romerías (annual religious pilgrimages) like El Rocío, the fairs, Easter or carnivals are many of the not be missed dates of the Andalucian holiday calendar, and are as varied as its own geographical territory.
Some of the most representative holidays are:
Week prior to the Ash Wednesday (between the 5th of February and the 4th of March). Carnaval Fiestas. Cadiz capital and province, Isla Cristina and Ayamonte (Huelva) are worth visiting..
Easter. Processions in all Andalucia, especially in Seville, Malaga, Cordoba and Granada.
April : Seville's Feria de Abril.
Last Sunday in April, Virgen de la Cabeza’s Romeria. Andujar (Jaén).
First 2 weeks in May. International Theatre Festival. Granada.
From 7th to 11th of May. Feria de la Primavera y del vino fino (Spring and vino fino fair). El Puerto de Santa Maria (Cadiz).
From 10th to 17th May. Feria del Caballo (Horse Fair). Jerez de la Frontera
From 19th to 24th May. Feria de la Manzanilla. Sanlucar de Barrameda (Cadiz).
May (though the month). Cruces de Mayo, patios, feria. National Competition of Flamenco Art (every three years). Cordoba.
Mayo. El Rocio’s Romeria. Almonte (Huelva).
16th July (Virgen del Carmen). Sea Processions. Many places on the coast, especially Almeria.
22-27 July. Nerja Caves Festival. Nerja (Malaga).
July – August. Colombinas Fiestas. Huelva
August. Horses Races in the beach. Sanlucar de Barrameda (Cadiz). International Music and Dance. Priego de Cordoba
22-31 August. Virgen del Mar’s Fiestas. Almeria.
13-21 August. Malaga’s Fair.
Penultimate August Sunday. Moros y Cristianos Fiestas. Bubion (Granada).
First Week of September. Corridas Goyescas. Festival de Cante Grande. Ronda (Malaga)
